Oblong Face Shape

Common oblong face features

An oblong face shape has a distinctly longer-than-wide outline and fairly even upper, cheek and jaw widths.

Some people call this a rectangle face shape.

  1. Visible length is clearly greater than cheek width, more so than in oval.
  2. Upper outline, cheeks and jaw are similar in width rather than tapering.
  3. The jaw can be rounded or angular; angular corners read as rectangle within this family.

ShapeVisible patternLength ÷ cheek widthUpper ÷ cheek widthJaw ÷ cheek widthJaw turn
OblongDistinctly longer than wide; widths fairly even1.700.930.84144°
OvalLonger than wide; jaw tapers inward to a soft chin1.420.920.78151°
DiamondCheekbones clearly widest; narrower top and jaw1.430.780.74144°

Oblong shares length with oval but stays wider at the jaw. Diamond can be similarly long but narrows above and below the cheekbones. A broad outline with strong corners that is not especially long is better compared with square.

What a photo cannot establish

Length is the measurement most affected by the camera. A phone held close or below the chin stretches the lower face; tilting the head back shortens it. The detector also measures to an upper-outline point, not the true hairline, so a high or hidden hairline changes the result. A single photo cannot establish a fixed face shape or guarantee a styling outcome. This is not a medical assessment.
